Weird and Wonderful Winners
Sims Spark’d is a large scale competition in which every day Simmers can compete. After choosing a category — stylist (create-a-Sim), builder (build mode), or storytelling (often videos or comics, Simmers respond to a certain prompt within that caregory.
The latest Spark’d prompt from the Sims team was Halloween. Stylists created brand new creatures “never seen before” in the world of Sims, builders created stunning haunted houses, and storytellers wove terrifying tales.
The winners of this competition were announced November 23rd, 2020.

As some of the western world braces for a cold, dark winter under the looming shadow of a Coronavirus third wave, many gamers are battening down the hatches once again to spend more time in the pixelated worlds they love most. Simmers are no exception. American players prepare themselves for their most isolated Thanksgiving holiday in recent history, and they turn to their games and gaming communities for both company and comfort. In response, developers are cranking out patches, purchasable packs, and playable events to keep Simmers satiated for the holidays. FreePlay wound through the last of its November events this week; Sims Mobile offered players pack deals and an event rerun; and Sims 4 served a plate of hot patches for its recent Snowy Escape mishaps.
The Sims FreePlay
After a new Maternity pack released on November 15th, Sims FreePlay players enjoyed SimChase 21 on November 17th. This event matches the player with a rival Sim, challenging the two to a race against time. If players manage to beat the rival at several grueling events, then they receive some cozy furniture and female hairstyles in return.
Urban Chic is an event which triggers in Sims FreePlay on November 20th, allowing Simmers the chance to win sleek, fashion-forward wear for their pixel people.
Sims FreePlay developers also announced their Share Your Care Competition winners this week. “Hundreds of Sims players shared the care in SimTown, helping to bring kindness & goodwill to those around them,” tweeted the official FreePlay account. “The winners of the Care Bears plush bears & the 2.5 Million Simoleons are:
Congratulations to all the winners, and enjoy not only the plush but also that cold, hard cash!
The Sims Mobile
Meanwhile, Sims Mobile players entertained a rerun of Treatsylvania Sweet Treats on November 12th. The rerun allowed players who missed out another crack at winning an upright coffin, a dark lady dress and hair style, and other gothic accoutrements. Players who attempted this event before began where they last left it. Players who completed the event did not see the event trigger at all.
The newest Wumples, which offers a tabletop helm, mounted ship sculpture, and ten fashion gems as prizes in return for 5-day to do list leapt in game November 17th. It was quickly followed by November 19th purchasable pack called the “floral fashion pack.” Boasting new male hair, a casual, flower printed jacket, skin-tight flower print leggings, sneakers, a loose-fitting outfit, and a handful of simoleons, this pack popped in game for $8.99 USD.
In other news, Sims Mobile developers rolled ut an in-game survey that asked players about their intrinsic and extrinsic motivations for playing Sims Mobile. The survey, now available, asked players such questions as, “What goals are you working toward right now in the game?” “Would you recommend this game to a friend?” “What is most important to you in the game?” Well-known mobile Simmers spoke up with brutal honesty, citing the game’s persistent glitches and unsatisfying, repetitive gameplay as the game’s biggest downfall.
Unofficially, renegade Reddit user Binjey leaked new photos of what appears to be the next Sims Mobile Treasure hunt and Wumples event. If the leak is correct, Simmers will soon dig, scrape, and investigate to earn gamer-themed prizes. The grand prize is a VR gaming station, a gamer’s battle station, and a female dreaded hairstyle.
Lastly, any self-quarantining Simmers may attend Sims Nation’s 3-day Simsgiving. The Facebook Group will host holiday movie watch parties, hold football team colors contests, enjoy recipe swaps, and far more.

The Sims 4
The days following Snowy Escape’s release were perhaps predictably troubling. Eager PC and console players quickly tempered their excitement as their games repeatedly sputtered and crashed to a halt. Days later, the team released a patch for consoles and PCs. The patch corrected the crashing issue for some and imbued other games with endless loading screens. The patch was patched November 19th, and we can only wait to see if this patch was finally successful.
Until next time, stay safe, stay warm, mask up, and happy Simming!
This challenge is meant to be fun and push your creativity to the test. We have so many talented CAS creators in our community and we are hoping to put the spotlight on some of their fantastic and imaginative skills. Have fun, and I can not wait to see what you create!

Console Simmers Get their Fix
In a patch as massive as the one which preceded the Snowy Escape expansion pack, there are bound to be pesky bugs and persistent glitches, but on November 10th, what many Simmers received in this patch was a game-breaking headache.
Soon after patch release, both PC and console players witnessed their game audio suddenly sputter and their gameplay screech to a halt. For many Simmers, this glitch prevented them from playing at all.
On November 17th, PC Simmers received a patch to correct the rampant crashing, though even this patch wasn’t without issue: some players reported experiencing and endless loading screen afterward. But console players had to wait until the Sony and Microsoft Gods gave their exalted permission before before they could receive the patch.
On November 18th, console player prayers were answered.
Console players should update their games and keep developers in the loop about any more issues.
Stay warm and Sim on, players.
A Troubled Launch
The Snowy Escape pre-patch, released on November 10th, folded highly-anticipated features in-game such as build-mode platforms, a “sentiments” system that enriches Sim relationships, new half-wall heights, and rental lots in every Sims 4 world.
This patch was massive, over 2MB, and had players squirming with glee in their gaming chairs. However, this massive patch caused some, perhaps unexpected set-backs. Almost on cue, Simmers’ joy dissolved into unmitigated frustration as their beloved game- both on PC and console— sputtered and coughed to a grinding start, only to crash unexpectedly mid-game. The game-changing patch had become a game-breaking one, and many Simmers took to Twitter to grumble about it.
Happily, the Sim Gurus both recognized and moved to remedy the crashes. After advising a workaround which involved fiddling with the game’s launch settings, the Sims 4 development team finally rolled out a hot fix patch for PC on November 17th.
After downloading the much needed patch, some players experienced new glitches such as an infinite loading screen. SimGurRuskii quickly intervened.
Players should remove their mods just in case they become incompatible with corrected game code, download the patch through Origin, cross their fingers, and pray.
The Sims 4
The Sims FreePlay
The holiday season has officially kicked off in several Sims circles, with Sims FreePlay, Sims Mobile, and Sims 4 rolling out seasonal events and expansions to entertain their players. FreePlay delved into Thanksgiving content, Sims Mobile reran a bone-chilling Halloween bake-off, and Sims 4 prepared to release their holiday expansion pack, Snowy Escape, with a huge patch.
FreePlay made their players thankful with a feast of Thanksgiving events. Brilliant Backyard Live event started November 5th, offering players outdoor furniture in return for crafted items; Sim Chase Season 11 ran again, also on November 5th, to reward players with more backyard furniture, picnic items, and a female updo; and finally, the “Missing Claus” quest, a Christmas-themed fan-favorite that awards the persistent player with a quaint farmhouse as a grand prize.
November 17th will bring SimChase season 21, a brand new gamut of events that rewards the player with Thanksgiving decor, hair, and clothes after beating an opponent to various “checkpoints.”
The Sims Mobile
The Sims Mobile released some long-anticipated purchasable packs this week, including “Haunted Housewares.” This pack, which ran for 7.99 USD, offered a decorative four-poster bed, a fantastic ceiling lamp, and a set of Art Nouveau accents: a carpet, wall art, a dresser, and a mirror.
The Gothic Set, offered for 5.99 USD, also triggered in game this week on November 6th, but the offering proved different than the one last year. Developers removed a set of paintings, replaced them with a decorative sink, and then lowered the price.
The long-awaited “Fall out and Make-up” pack for 7.99 USD triggered in game November 11th, but not without hiccups. Some players purchased the pack and quickly realized some make-up variants were unavailable for their Sims of color. Developers quickly looked into the issue, but the problem is not yet resolved.
November 7th, a new Wumples hopped into game, offering players a poster, a coffee table book, and ten fashion gems in return for a completed, five-day long task list.
Finally, on November 12th, Sims Mobile reran last year’s “Sweet Treat Showdown: Treatsylvania” event. Although players who completed the event last year did not receive it again, players who were unable to complete the event last year or who are newer to the game got their chance to earn Halloween-themed goth gear such as spooky wall art, jack-o-lanterns, candelabras, chandeliers, and a coffin bed.
The Snowy Escape pre-patch triggered in Origin November 10th at 10 AM PST. This massive patch delivered much of what Sims players have desired a long time: platforms, new half-wall sizes, deeper more meaningful Sim relationships via sentiments and a Sim info panel, vacation lots in every world, and updated skin tones. The update also corrected many Eco Lifestyle bugs and a meme-generating mishap that led Sims to wash dishes in bathroom sinks instead of kitchen sinks.
However, this update did not come without issues. Many PC and console players report consistent game crashing errors after downloading the patch. After running smoothly for twenty minutes, the game presents an error code and closes unexpectedly. Developers are working on a hot fix. In the meantime, SimGurus urge players to turn off their volume options in-game to avoid unexpected crashes.
Of course, Snowy Escape officially released November 13th, much to players’ giddy joy. Players are skiing, snowboarding, and climbing to their heart’s content, but there remains a growing, grumbling dissatisfaction about the prevalence of the game’s latest game-breaking glitch.
Until next time, stay safe, stay warm, keep wearing your mask, and happy Simming!
